After two strong performances in the school auditorium, E10 Drama and Music students took their rocked-out rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet to the Grand Ballroom at the Rosedale Hotel for a final sold-out evening performance on Friday, March 29. With over 170 friends, family members and staff in attendance, the young actors and musicians gave their best efforts and delivered a stellar show.
In the spotlight, Geon Lee delivered a stirring performance as Romeo, countered by Lauren You as Juliet. Director Kel Lamplough’s use of a chorus means that each actor is on stage nearly all of the time and has many lines to speak. This inclusive technique lends itself well to smaller settings, engaging the audience with 360 degrees of movement and voice. It was magical on the elevated stage at the Rosedale, with the chorus delivering many punchlines that got the audience laughing, complementing the action in the foreground with commentary and sound effects.
Jan Rues’s E10 Music students formed the accompanying orchestra for the production, opening each act with a mood-setting overture and rousing the crowd with anthems such as ‘We Will Rock You’ and the ‘Rocky’ theme. Just as the actors spent their Drama classes this year learning the play and rehearsing for this performance, Music students have been building towards the goal of providing the live soundtrack and they did not disappoint. Their hard-work and dedication resulted in a show that left the audience wowed. A big thanks to all students and staff involved for a great production!
